Also interchangeably called Myofascial Release, Deep Tissue works to release restrictions within the fascia, which can be caused by a variety of reasons such as injuries and postural discrepancy. Fascia can be viewed as being a pliable sheet that holds all parts of the body together, and as injury and repetitive strain occurs, this disrupts the balance of the fascial network surrounding all muscles and joints, leading to reduced flexibility or stability, pain, and increased chance of injury. By restoring efficient movement into these tissues, the body is able to move more smoothly, circulation is increased, metabolic bi-product wastes are removed, posture is improved and pain is alleviated. Deep Tissue uses slow, progressive pressure, called myofascial unwinding, to avoid activating protective responses in the muscle. Often times the receiver will not realise how deep the therapist is working, and clients are encouraged to express when pressure is too firm. Although the impression most have is that Deep Tissue is painful, this is not so. Deep Tissue is about accessing tissues on a deep level, but does not need to be painful to be effective and can actually be very relaxing.
A detailed account into the client’s medical history is taken to pinpoint the origin of the injury or chronic pain. Myofascial restrictions and strain patterns are identified, and myofascial unwinding is applied along with Thai Yoga Massage stretches when applicable. The session concludes with advice on exercises and stretches to maintain and improve postural balance. One hour sessions are more suitable for specific areas of tension, whereas one and a half hours are suitable for more than one area and more complex tensions. Many after receiving Deep Tissue report that their body feels more ease in movement, improved posture, significant relaxation and noticeable release.
