Sue has worked in healthcare and professional education for over 35 years. As a registered general nurse she worked in gynaecology and intensive care, and was a surgical ward sister. Since qualifying as a teacher in 1981, she has taught students of nursing and acupuncture and, more recently, students on the BSc in Complementary Therapies course at Napier University.
Sue's interest in alternative medicine began in the 1970s, and she studied acupuncture at the College of Traditional Acupuncture, Leamington Spa, graduating in 1992. She has a strong commitment to professional development, and has undertaken a number of post-graduate courses. Her current studies are at the College of Integrated Chinese Medicine, Reading.
She moved to Edinburgh in 1996 and has practised here since then. She loves being an acupuncturist because it offers a means of working with people in an individual and holistic manner, taking account of their specific problems and needs. As a system of medicine, acupuncture can help individuals with a wide range of health problems, and can also assist people to remain well.
